An official OpenAI X account was taken over to peddle a crypto scam

An official OpenAI account on X was taken over to hawk a cryptocurrency rip-off on Monday night.

On Monday at 6:24PM ET, the @OpenAINewsroom account, which shares information from OpenAI and has practically 54,000 followers, made a now-deleted publish promoting an “$OPENAI” token.

“We’re very glad to announce $OPEANAI: the token bridging the hole between Al and blockchain expertise,” the publish mentioned. “All OpenAI customers are eligible to say a chunk of $OPENAI’s preliminary provide. Holding $OPENAI will grant entry to all of our future beta packages.” The publish additionally included a hyperlink to a spoofed model of OpenAI’s web site at a URL that wasn’t openai.com.

After I visited the location, there was a bit for claiming the $OPENAI cryptocurrency. After I clicked the button, it requested me to attach a pockets, which I didn’t do.

OpenAI and X didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark. As of this writing, the OpenAI Newsroom account hasn’t posted something to clarify what may need occurred. The account launched originally of this month.
